How to Integrate Originality.ai with Moodle
Originality.ai can be integrated with Moodle to help educators and institutions check submitted content for AI-generated text and plagiarism directly within their learning management workflow.
The Originality.ai plugin is now available on the Moodle Marketplace, allowing Enterprise users to subscribe directly through the Moodle platform.

What Does the Originality.ai Moodle Integration Do?
The Moodle integration brings Originality.ai's content-checking capabilities into Moodle so instructors can review student work without manually copying submissions into Originality.ai.
Depending on the features enabled for your organization, Originality.ai can help identify:
- AI-generated content using Originality.ai's AI detection models
- Plagiarism and matching content from online sources
- Detailed scan results that instructors can use as part of their review process
Originality.ai scan results should be treated as one source of information when evaluating student work rather than as automatic proof of academic misconduct.
Before You Begin
To configure the integration, you will need:
- Access to the Originality.ai Moodle plugin
- An active Originality.ai subscription or applicable Moodle Marketplace subscription
- For grandfathered subscription customers, your Originality.ai API key, available from your dashboard
- Moodle administrator permissions to install and configure plugins
If you are an instructor rather than a Moodle administrator, your school's Moodle administrator may need to complete the initial setup for you.

Scanning Student Submissions
When Originality.ai scanning is enabled for an assignment, supported student submissions can be sent to Originality.ai for analysis.
Instructors can then access the Originality.ai results from the Moodle assignment or submission workflow.
Results may include:
AI Detection
The AI detection result estimates whether the submitted text appears to have been written by a human or generated using an AI writing tool.
An AI detection score is not a determination of academic misconduct. Instructors should consider the result alongside the student's previous work, assignment requirements, drafting history, and other available evidence.
Plagiarism Detection
When plagiarism checking is enabled, Originality.ai analyzes the submitted content for matching material.
Instructors can review identified matches and their sources to determine whether content has been appropriately quoted, cited, or attributed.
Recommended Workflow for Instructors
When reviewing an Originality.ai result in Moodle:
- Open the student's submission.
- Review the Originality.ai scan results.
- Examine any highlighted AI-detection or plagiarism findings.
- Review matching sources when plagiarism is detected.
- Consider the results alongside other evidence related to the assignment.
- Follow your institution's academic-integrity policies before taking action.
Originality.ai provides information to assist with review; the final interpretation of a student's submission remains with the instructor or institution.
Troubleshooting
Originality.ai Does Not Appear in Moodle
Confirm that:
- The Originality.ai plugin has been successfully installed.
- The plugin is enabled in Moodle.
- The integration has been configured with a valid subscription or Originality.ai API key, as applicable.
- Your Moodle account has permission to access the feature.
If you are an instructor, contact your Moodle administrator.
A Submission Is Not Being Scanned
Check that Originality.ai scanning is enabled for the assignment and that the submitted file or text is supported.
If other submissions are scanning successfully but a particular submission is not, review the submission format and plugin configuration.
Scan Results Are Not Appearing
Allow the scan to finish processing and refresh the submission page.
If results continue to be unavailable, verify the Originality.ai integration settings and account access.
